  • Swallowing

Eating and drinking are critical for maintaining quality of life and socialization. When changes to the swallowing mechanism occur, it can have a profound affect on their life and their loved ones. As individuals age, risk of difficulty swallowing (or dysphagia) can increase including difficulty swallowing pills, foods getting stuck in their throat, or coughing/choking when eating or drinking.

Other risk factors that can increase risk for dysphagia include:

    · Head and neck cancer

    · Stroke

    · Respiratory illness such as Congestive Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

    · Dementia

    · Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

A Speech Pathologist can perform a swallow evaluation to determine if diet modifications, strategies, or therapy can help improve safety and efficiency of swallowing.

  • Communication

If you or a loved one has experienced a stroke, brain injury, or progressive disease, you may notice changes to your ability to communicate easily. Common examples of what you may be experiencing include:

    · You know what you want to say, but can't always get the words out

    · You cannot speak in complete sentences

    · People do not understand what you are saying

    · You get stuck on words when you talk

Our Speech Pathologists will work to obtain information from your doctors about what may have caused these changes and can provide assessment and treatment for your impairments.

  • Cognition

Speech Pathologists are trained to evaluate and treat individuals who are experiencing any changes to their memory, attention, or ability to plan and sequence. You could benefit from speech therapy if you have a diagnosis of:

    · Traumatic Brain Injury

    · Dementia

    · Alzheimer's disease

    · Mild Cognitive Impairment

    · Parkinson's disease

Reach out as soon as you or a loved one has started to become forgetful, confused, easily distractible, or struggling to keep up with activities of daily living.

  • Voice

As you age, changes to your vocal quality can occur. Your voice may start to sound raspy, quiet, or strained. You may also notice vocal fatigue as the day goes on or you speak more. There can also be changes to your voice box after some sort of vocal trauma or poor voicing behaviors. We recommend seeking an evaluation with an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist to further identify the etiology before beginning speech/voice therapy. Then we can address how to best support you. Examples of voice disorders or changes you may notice include:

    · Spasmodic Dysphonia

    · Vocal tremor

    · Muscle Tension Dysphonia

    · Vocal fatigue at the end of the day

    · Increased hoarseness

    · Pain or discomfort in your throat

Don’t let changes to your voice affect you, reach out to learn more about how we can help!
